Who we are

The Schroeder Lab is a collaborative and inclusive group working toward a better understanding of how the brain gives rise to internal states that drive adaptive behavior.

Our lab offers cutting-edge neuroscience in a supportive environment

We are determined to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all that is conducive to rigorous science and discovery. Integrating diverse perspectives, open communication, and creativity will be key to our success as individuals and as a team. Our aim is to be highly collaborative within our group, as well as within the broader Munich neuroscience community and beyond.

Our lab works hard, but we also know how to have fun! We strive to create an environment where team members can grow as scientists, build life-long friendships with their peers, and create lasting memories.

Our commitment

Anna is deeply committed to training, mentorship, and career development for lab members. Anyone who joins the team will have the support of a young, considerate, and highly motivated PI who is genuinely invested in their success as an early-career scientist.

Our tech

The lab is equipped with cutting-edge molecular, cellular, and circuit neuroscience technologies and aims to work together to tackle truly captivating major open questions in neuroscience.

LMU Munich is a wonderful place for neuroscience

The LMU Biocenter is at the leading edge of cellular and systems neuroscience research with a focus on mechanisms of perception and behavior. It houses rich expertise in both experimental and computational neuroscience across a number of highly interactive research groups. The institute is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and core facilities to support investigation spanning from molecules to behavior.

Munich houses one of the strongest neuroscience communities in Europe. There are outstanding opportunities for collaboration and engagement given the close proximity of not only our LMU colleagues, but also Max Planck Institutes (e.g., Biological Intelligence, Psychiatry), the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Helmholtz Institutes, and TU Munich, which are all intricately connected via the Munich Center for Neurosciences (MCN).

LMU Munich is often ranked as the best university in Germany and is consistently ranked among the top 50 universities worldwide, both overall and for life sciences specifically. It is at the forefront of the German excellence initiatives and brings in more DFG funding than any other university in the country. It, therefore, offers an extraordinary environment for scientific discovery, technological advancement, and intellectual growth.

The Graduate School of Systemic Neuroscience (GSN) at LMU Munich, with acceptance rates close to 3%, offers excellent M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in neuroscience which attract talent from around the world. Our neuroscience degree is ranked first in Germany. According to the Nature Index, LMU Munich is the top academic institution in Germany for neuroscience.

Munich is a vibrant, international city close to lakes and mountains. It is consistently ranked among the top 10 cities in the world for quality of living.

Postdoctoral Applicants

Contact Anna with a cover letter detailing prior research experience, future career goals and why you'd like to join the Schroeder lab. Please also send a CV and the names and contact details of 2-3 referees.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for external funding (e.g., Marie Curie, EMBO, HFSP, Alexander von Humboldt).

Ph.D. or M.Sc. Applicants

Apply to the GSN and specify your interest in the Schroeder lab. Current or accepted GSN students can contact Anna directly with a CV. If you haven’t applied yet, you are encouraged to reach out to Anna to discuss potential opportunities! But, be aware that priority is given to GSN students.

B.Sc. Applicants

Summer interns have the opportunity to apply to the Amgen Summer School. Anna has a longstanding arrangement to recruit Jeff Metcalf interns from the University of Chicago, and undergraduates interested in joining through this program should get in contact. Other bachelor students, especially those in Munich, can also contact Anna to ask about short or long-term training possibilities.
